Today one of my users noticed that when he posted a link to a photo with a .JPEG extension it didn't show up on our Kunena forum.  This isn't an issue with Kunena but Joomla itself. This is an easy fix and I can't believe it went 2 years before anyone noticed it.

How-To Search Engine Freindly URL's (SEF) Joomla

This article addresses SEF URLs under the popular, open-source Apache webserver.

SEF URL implementation is possible under Microsoft's IIS webserver as well, please see IIS and Joomla.

Apache Instructions

1. Rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

  • If Joomla is installed in its own folder, uncomment "RewriteBase /" and enter the Joomla folder name after the backslash. Example: RewriteBase /joomla
  • If you already have an .htaccess file open it up in notepad and check what is in it.  Some hosts put scripts into this file like the example:
    1

    AddHandler php5-script .php

If you have a script in there just copy it and past it at the bottom of your htaccess.txt file, and rename the original .htaccess file.

2. Make sure that Mod_rewrite is working. Check that the line shown below in the file "apache/conf/httpd.conf" is uncommented. If necessary, uncomment the line and re-start the Apache web server.
1
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

How to install a Joomla template

install-joomla-templatesJoomla 1.5 installs with three pre-installed templates. These templates are good as a starting point when learning Joomla. Still, if you want to create a Joomla website, you will want to look at other templates as well.

There are a lot of templates out there. Both free and commercial. I usually recommend spending a few dollars on a template from a professional provider if you're creating a business website. You will get those dollars back in less frustrations, better search engine rankings and easier customization. The support is also better (not always, though).

This tutorial will show you how to install a Joomla template and how to get started customizing it.
